There are many things to insure on Downton Abbey’s 1,000 acres of land. For starters, there’s the spacious guest house where Isobel Crawley enjoys afternoon tea and crumpets. There are also several stables that house the family’s horses.
It might sound crazy, but the landscaping even needs special protection. Downton Abbey boasts acre upon acre of artfully landscaped property and formal gardens. In addition to run-of-the-mill shrubs, trees and plants, you’ll find fruit trees, a decorative rose garden and 38 native British trees on the property. These would all need replaced if they became damaged.
Most insurance companies provide coverage for trees and shrubs up to a certain limit. For homes with extensive (and expensive) landscaping, it’s best to seek coverage from specialty insurers that cover unique risks.
